File format specification
AutoCAD files have a double-extension.dwg. The extension.dwg is used in the Windows operating system, and the extension.dwg is used on Mac OS and Linux systems. Older versions of AutoCAD on Windows used a single.dwg file extension; however, this older format is no longer supported by new versions.
Before 2008, AutoCAD files were delimited by carriage returns (CR) and line feeds (LF), and contained enough information to reproduce the drawing in any viewer. However, as the format evolved, additional information was added to AutoCAD files. This additional information was introduced to allow the output of a drawing to be customized by the user.
Because AutoCAD files were often large and processing power was limited, storing large amounts of data in the.dwg format was impractical. In addition, at the time when AutoCAD was introduced, there were no standard file formats for storing computer graphics. An early goal of the AutoCAD development team was to produce a file format that would be universally accepted for both desktop and server-based software applications.
The file fields below are typical of the first version of AutoCAD, released in 1982. These fields are now present in AutoCAD 2010, AutoCAD LT 2010, AutoCAD LT 2013, AutoCAD WS 2013, and AutoCAD WS 2015.
The Model space
The model space consists of the properties, parameters, and objects of the drawing. The model space is specified by coordinates, vectors, and datums, and consists of the properties and properties of objects that belong to the model space. Dimension constraints create a virtual grid that is dynamically updated as the drawing is edited and allows adjustment of the grids for dimensioning. For example, the dimension line can be shifted to make a different dimension. A virtual grid is a special type of constraint that allows dimension lines to be placed across dimension points. Each dimension point can be joined to one or more dimension lines. Each dimension line is connected to one dimension point, and one dimension point is connected to one dimension line. When you edit one dimension line, all the dimension points connected to that dimension line move to adjust for the new dimension value.
An overlapping grid is a grid that overlaps dimension lines and overlaps dimension points. It is a type of constrained grid that is not dynamically updated, but is maintained on screen in its original position. Each dimension line or dimension point can be moved to adjust for the new dimension value.
Dimensions can be changed from either the dimensioning tab or the constraints tab. The design can have multiple sets of dimensions. As the design changes, dimensions for the current design are the only ones that adjust.
The following table shows what dimension lines and dimension points can be overlapped by a dimension.
A constraint line can be used to connect a curved surface to a surface or a line. It can be used to create a surface as follows. Let the curved surface be and the line be. The line can be considered to be a curved surface or a straight surface. The intersection between and is shown in the table. The intersection of and is the entire curved surface.
Split and join is a mechanism where a dimension line or dimension point can be joined by splitting or being split. This can be done by selecting a line segment and pressing the (or on the numeric keypad) and then pressing the (or on the numeric keypad).

The Info windows now show context-sensitive tooltips.
Refresh icons on the taskbar to see the latest updates for your documents.
Menu Bar Design Changes:
Use the Design bar to control a set of commands.
Use the Export-Import bar to control settings for the Import-Export dialog.
Use the Import bar to control a set of commands for importing CAD files.
Use the Tools bar to control a set of commands for common tools in AutoCAD.
