After early predictions that the legalisation of cannabis would be beneficial for the bottom line of the franchise, fast-food giant McDonalds is looking to open its first cannabis store in Canada. The restaurant chain has secured a lease in Vancouver, with plans to open a one of a kind store to have products sold in plain packaging and its own brand.
The restaurant chain is hoping to attract young consumers to the cannabis store, who are more receptive towards fast-food, after seeing the legalization of cannabis make an early impact in the industry. The sale of edibles and beverages is also expected to be a major component of the new store.
“Cannabis can be a gateway to a great product or a gateway to darkness,” said Shane Sholley, senior vice-president of consumer, McDonalds Canada.
“For us the brand is just as strong as it was when we opened the first McDonalds restaurant back in 1948 in British Columbia, so we’re not daunted by the challenge. We believe it’s about to be a very exciting time in Canada.”
“The opportunity to be part of that is something we’re really proud of,” said Todd Quinton, President & CEO of Canopy Growth Corporation, the largest licensed producer of legal cannabis in Canada. “Our model is one where we don’t market cannabis and don’t sell cannabis. We’re proud to be working with McDonalds to develop a really important part of our industry,” he said.
McDonalds plans to remain strict on promoting underage usage of the product, as the franchise chain wishes to ensure its business remains on a legal footing. Young Canadian consumers could be tempted by a novelty item such as a toke and think they can go undetected, but this would be mistaken as teens already have a wide use of such products.
Consumers looking for professional advice on how to use their cannabis products should have little trouble finding outlets.
