Comey’s tenure has been a major win for Trump in keeping the Russia investigation alive.
I’ve written about how I believe the Russia investigation has been a major victory for President Donald J. Trump. As a former FBI special agent, I knew from the outset that Comey’s leadership style and management style would benefit a Russia investigation. I supported Comey’s nomination to FBI director and did not criticize his personal integrity while I was with the bureau.
I think Trump did well in getting Comey to stay on the job a couple weeks after a planned investigation into former national security adviser Michael Flynn’s links to Russian intelligence. Given Comey’s problems at the agency and his secretive relationship with the president, the way in which he kept the Russia investigation going for an extra two weeks does deserve praise.
Comey’s tenure has been a major win for Trump in keeping the Russia investigation alive. It has also impeded leaks of information to the media.
Bob Bauer, who was part of the administration’s team dealing with the Russian issue, was a vocal critic of Comey. He emphasized that Comey had warned Trump that a president can never obstruct justice and that Comey was violating his oath of office by having unauthorized conversations with the president regarding classified or sensitive information. Bauer said Comey was not properly following the FBI’s leadership manual.
Bauer pointed to the fact that a low-level FBI official at the White House (Comey) had more than one private, off-the-record meeting with the president. This, Bauer argued, was a “huge” no-no. Bauer’s key concern was that the FBI was getting sidetracked with a counterintelligence investigation on alleged collusion between Trump and Russia when the agency was actually supposed to be focused on “domestic�
