Guthrie is a small lunar impact crater on the Moon’s far side, to the southeast of the prominent Montes mountains. It lies to the south of the smaller but more heavily damaged crater Vertrees. West-northwest of this is the smaller Jolliet.

Like all of the Montes mountain system, this is a heavily eroded and irregular-shaped formation. To the southeast of Guthrie lies the Apennine-looking hill Argyrophilah, with a peak just to its north, and a brighter area to the southeast that must be Alphonsus. The rugged terrain to the north of the mountain system is otherwise mostly unremarkable.

The rim of this crater has been heavily eroded and uneven, and rises to a maximum height of only about 1.8 km. Most of the rim edge has slumped away from the center, leaving a wall that is still significantly higher than the crater floor. Along the southwest is a narrower ridge that rises high above the floor, which slopes gently outward to the east. The interior floor is marked only by several tiny craterlets and a few tiny patches of mare basalt in places along the northwestern and southern rims.

The crater name was approved in 1970 by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) to honor the American meteorologist and astronomer James T. Guthrie.

Satellite craters
By convention these features are identified on lunar maps by placing the letter on the side of the crater midpoint that is closest to Guthrie.
